Update.

I was going to put everything I ate, and the exercise I did. I have been documenting, but just have not had the energy to add more to the blogs than I have. I also thought it would be pretty boring reading.

So lets just allow that I have been eating healthy and have gone to the gym everyday but today. Also walking a lot!!

Why?

So what is with this radical sabbatical notion anyway? I need to give you some background. I have been struggling with my weight through my life, gaining and losing many many times. I ran into the book "My Big Fat Greek Diet" by Dr. Nick Yphantides, and decided it was significantly different approach. I was also able to go to his local meetings, and met many people who had lost more weight that I weigh, and have been able to keep it off for a significant amount of time. Also this is not some marketing ploy for a new diet product. Sure, they will sell you the book, but they will also give it away to people who are interested, but don't have the funds.

One of the "seven pillars of weight loss" from the book is to take a radical sabbatical. In the process of losing his 260 plus pounds, Dr. Nick traveled around the country for eight months, using a medically monitored liquid protein diet, and went to ball games. He felt that the only way he'd be able to do this is to focus on something he really loves, as a "distraction from deprivation." Since I was looking forward to going to MacWorld, I decided to use this as a mini radical sabbatical.

A major motivating factor for me to take this health thing seriously is the fact that my brother Chris died of a heart attack. He was much younger than I, and weighed much more. It is one of my most unflattering picture. One of the last things we did together was to go to the MacWorld convention last year. Okay, so both of us are geeks, and we really enjoyed ourselves. Plus, it is in San Francisco, a place I have always loved to visit. The picture at the top of the page, has Chris in the foreground, snapping the shot, and me in the Hawaiian shirt.

One of the nice things about this program, for some like me, is that there is not a specific diet recommended. I've already tried the various programs, and they all work. However I always have gained weight back eventually. The focus of this program is "how to lose weight and never find it again." That doesn't mean you don't have to restrict your calorie intake, and increase your exercise. He just encourages you to find a program that will work for you. Because the diet is the simple part. Making the lasting changes that will keep you from finding it again is the important part.

Since I have tried all the ways of quickly losing weight, I have decided to try this simple program of eating less and exercising more. This is a lot slower. I'm also hoping that this will allow me to easily transition into the maintenance phase. I guess time will tell.
